- What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a chronic and life-long condition where too much lymph fluid gets stored in tissues. When lymph fluid isn’t able to drain well, it can lead to swelling, heaviness in the limbs, and sometimes pain.
In the beginning, symptoms like inflammation may come and go. Flare-ups may come about due to overuse of the associated limb, excessive sun exposure, hormonal changes, stress, or a high-sodium diet. As the condition progresses, the symptoms may be more persistent and debilitating.
Symptoms can go beyond just feeling uncomfortable or looking puffy. The affected person may also be at a higher risk of developing other conditions such as infections including cellulitis, tissue damage, or even a rare cancer called lymphangiosarcoma.
- Can Exercising Improve Lymphedema Symptoms?
Yes, certain exercise can help some of the symptoms associated with lymphedema. Regular workouts can help boost blood circulation, improve lymphatic function, and improve joint mobility. It can also help one achieve or maintain a healthy weight, which can improve the lymphatic system.
Gentle exercises are recommended for those with lymphedema. Consider swimming, doing yoga, light resistance training, or walking. Wearing compression sleeves or socks during workouts can be helpful for fluid buildup.
High-intensity workouts, on the other hand, may have negative effects on those with poor lymphatic function.
Before engaging in exercise, reach out to a lymphatic specialist.
