Working out is great for one’s physical health, but it can also take a toll on the body as well. Think delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), temporary joint inflammation, or localized swelling and tension.

Being strategic about your workouts (e.g., warmups, cooldowns, etc.), taking ample time to rest between sessions, and engaging in proper post-workout recovery techniques can all play an essential role in helping your body reset from high-intensity activity.

Post-Workout Recovery

  • What is Post-Workout Recovery?

Post-workout recovery is a methodical course of action done to help recharge and restore the body after an intense workout.

While one person’s post-workout recovery can look different from another’s, it may involve:

  • Engaging in a light cool-down activity after a workout
  • Amping up on hydration and nutrition
  • Wearing compression garments to aid with circulation
  • Ensuring plenty of sleep each night to help the body repair faster
  • Participating in active recovery (light movements) on rest days to stimulate blood flow
  • Reducing inflammation with an ice pack or cold baths/showers
  • Why Do I Need Post-Workout Recovery?

While not every athlete or fitness enthusiast engages in post-workout recovery, those who do tend to recover quicker than those who won’t.

Engaging in post-workout recovery can help the muscles heal and grow, reduce exercise-induced soreness and inflammation, and replenish lost energy faster. It can also help you stay on top of your muscle/joint mobility and flexibility, which in turn can help with injury prevention.

  • How Long Does It Take to Recover After a Workout?

Recovering after a workout can take anywhere from a few hours to 72 hours or more, depending on how intense the workout was and the symptoms you’re experiencing. Whether or not you engage in proper post-workout recovery can also affect how quickly you recuperate after exercising.

In most cases, light to moderate workouts should take no longer than a full day or two to recover from. However, those of older age or people with less workout experience may naturally be slower to recover. High stress and poor sleep may also delay post-workout recovery.

  • Can Stretching Speed Up Recovery?

Yes, the right stretching routine can have a positive impact on your post-workout recovery.

Gentle stretching has the ability to lengthen your muscle fibers to reduce tightness, boost blood circulation for ample nutrient delivery, and decrease the risk of injury by improving the range of motion of your muscles and joints.
