Diabetic Ulcers
- What is a Diabetic Ulcer?
A diabetic ulcer is an open wound, most commonly found somewhere on the feet, which typically doesn’t heal on its own without treatment.
Ulcers are more common in diabetics than in the general healthy population. Nonetheless, they can also occur in non-diabetics as well.
- Why Are Diabetics Prone to Ulcers?
Having diabetes can increase the odds of ulcers for many reasons. Because the condition can have negative impacts on blood circulation and immune system function, those with diabetes are more likely to develop infections, wounds, and experience slower healing.
High blood sugar due to a diabetes diagnosis can also dampen nerve sensation, which may lead to foot ulcers going unnoticed and, thus, worsening.
- What Are the Symptoms of a Diabetic Ulcer?
Ulcers, whether due to diabetes or not, can trigger several symptoms. These open sores, which usually appear on the feet, may present:
- Redness or inflammation around the site
- Drainage of pus or blood
- Warmth from the wound
- Tissue discoloration
- Pain or discomfort
- In serious cases, signs of infection (e.g., fever, chills, worsening swelling, foul odor)
- What Are Some Ulcer Care Tips for People with Diabetes?
One of the key ways to reduce the odds of diabetic ulcers is to keep close tabs on one’s blood sugar levels daily.
If you’ve dealt with ulcers in the past or are looking for ways to prevent them from getting worse, here are some other care tips to consider:
- Ensure your feet are well-washed, properly dried before putting socks or shoes on, and kept moisturized.
- Wear the right footwear and socks to properly support your feet.
- Engage in daily exercise to upkeep proper blood circulation.
- Keep an eye on your feet regularly to look for signs of ulcer formation. The faster it’s spotted, the more effective treatment may be.
- Make an appointment with a doctor if you notice signs of an ulcer.
- Reduce excess pressure on your feet (e.g., long periods of standing) if you’re already experiencing an ulcer.
- Avoid trying to “heal” an ulcer at home alone, like cutting tissue or callus away.
- Can Wellness Services Help Heal Ulcers?
While wellness services at Recovery Lab cannot “cure” or prevent ulcers, the services at our facility have the potential to improve the recovery of ulcers and reduce their associated symptoms, alongside receiving standard medical treatment from a doctor.
Our center offers services like hyperbaric oxygen therapy to support wound healing, cryotherapy to reduce inflammation and pain, and NormaTec compression therapy to boost blood circulation to the legs.
