Neck Pain

  • What Causes Neck Pain?

With the neck being the link between your head and the rest of your body, your neck is one of the most prone places to be in pain.

To start, there are injuries, muscle strains and tears, and even medical conditions known to cause pain in the neck to worry about.

On top of those things, there are also headaches and migraines. These cause neck pain as the pain in your head causes you to tense up, tightening the muscles in your neck enough to strain them and make them hurt and can be caused at times by nothing more than stress in your daily life.

Unfortunately, headaches aren’t even the only thing causing your neck to hurt, as pain from other places can, and often does, radiate into your neck, making your neck hurt even when there’s actually nothing wrong with it.

For now, we’ll stick with neck pain as it concerns exercising next.

  • Can Exercising Cause Neck Pain?

Unfortunately, it can, and sometimes it’s a mystery why this happens. Mostly, this tends to be from poor posture and muscle imbalances.

The latter happens when you strengthen specific muscles without working on the ones nearby. This causes the stronger muscles to pull on the weaker ones, increasing the chances of straining these to the point of causing pain.

With neck muscles not being something many people think to work on, neck muscles are particularly susceptible to muscle imbalances.

  • Are There Ways To Prevent Neck Pain?

To prevent neck pain due to poor form, make sure you keep your neck straight, not arching to one side or the other or forward or back when you’re exercising. This will prevent any one specific muscle in your neck from being pulled and causing pain.

Also, to prevent muscle imbalances, working on your core muscles and making sure this includes the muscles into your neck is a good idea.

Warming up, avoiding overexertion, and stretching are all common sense solutions, especially if your warm-up or stretching includes your neck.

Most of all, the main key is to keep yourself from tightening your neck muscles, even if they or your head hurt. Breathing techniques are able to help here.
