  • The Types of Strength Training

There are so many types here, many having multiple names, exercises that overlap with each other, and other things to add confusion, but we’ll try to keep it simple.

Free Weight Training – involves training via lifting any or all types of weights as long as they’re not attached to anything. So, this would include dumbbells, barbells, and the like, but it would exclude any sort of machine. This is a very versatile option you can easily do at home during the week, and it has a bit of overlap with some of the other types.

Bodyweight Training – is where you only use your body weight and nothing else. This means lots of pushups, squats, etc., but it also means you need no equipment and are able to do it anywhere.

Powerlifting – is the one you’re probably picturing in your head when you think of strength training. It’s where you specifically focus on lifting, whether it’s a squatting lift, a bench press, or a deadlift.

Functional Strength Training – as its name suggests, focuses on exercises capable of helping you in your everyday life. This depends, of course, on what your everyday life entails. If you live in a third-floor apartment with no elevator, for example, you’ll want to include exercises to enable you to tackle those stairs with more ease.

  • The Whys Of Strength Training

Why go through all the trouble of strength training? Well, the main benefits of just about every type, besides the increase in strength and muscle mass, includes:

In terms of who benefits from it, strength training is great for assisting older people who want to stay active as they age, young people who want to be healthier so they live a long time, parents who need to be able to keep up with young kids, and even during pregnancy to ensure enough exercise to lower the risk of certain complications! In short, practically everyone.
