Muscle Scraping
Ever feel stiff, restricted, or like your body just isn't moving the way you'd like? Muscle scraping is a technique that may help you explore movement and mobility! Also known as Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), muscle scraping uses a specialized tool glided across the skin to provide targeted input to the underlying soft tissues.
Muscle Scraping
Despite the name, there's no actual scraping or cutting of your skin! The technique uses controlled pressure and movement to stimulate the area and may help improve how you feel and move.
At Recovery Lab, we use muscle scraping as just one of the many tools to support your recovery routine, movement comfort, and mobility goals.
- How Does Muscle Scraping Work?
Your muscles, fascia, and nervous system all play a role in how you move. Muscle scraping provides sensory and mechanical input to targeted areas using a smooth, controlled gliding technique.
Your Recovery Specialist selects the tool, technique, and pressure based on your needs and comfort level.
The goal isn't to push harder — it's to work smarter! We prioritize controlled application, your feedback, and comfortable movement throughout your session.
- What Are the Benefits?
Muscle scraping may help support your recovery and movement goals through:
- Improved Range of Motion
- Reduced Feelings of Stiffness and Tension
- Movement Comfort
- Soft Tissue Mobility
- Body Awareness
Everyone responds differently, and research on IASTM is still developing. Muscle scraping is a recovery tool, not a guaranteed fix or a substitute for medical care.
- Does Muscle Scraping Hurt?
Not necessarily! You may feel pressure, friction, or a firm gliding sensation as the tool moves across your skin. Some areas may be more sensitive than others.
Your Recovery Specialist will adjust the technique to your comfort level. More pressure doesn't mean better results, and pain isn't the goal.
- What Should I Expect After a Session?
You may notice changes in how an area feels or moves after your session. Temporary redness or tenderness can occur, but bruising isn't the goal of effective muscle scraping.
Let your Recovery Specialist know if you experience significant discomfort or unusual skin changes.
- Is Muscle Scraping Right for Me?
Muscle scraping may not be appropriate over open wounds, irritated or infected skin, or areas with certain circulation or sensation concerns. Recent injuries, bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medications, and other health conditions may also affect whether it's appropriate.
Share relevant health information with your Recovery Specialist before your session so they can help determine whether the technique is a suitable option for you.
